What is Neurodivergence?

Neurodivergence refers to variations in the human brain regarding sociability, learning, attention, mood and other cognitive functions.

Origin:

The term was coined to describe the diversity of human brains and how they function.

Different Types of Neurodivergence

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): A developmental condition affecting social communication and behaviour.
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): A condition characterised by inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity.
  • Dyslexia: A learning difference that affects reading and related language-based processing skills.
  • Dyscalculia: A learning difference that affects a person’s ability to understand numbers related concepts.
  • Dyspraxia: A motor coordination disorder affecting physical coordination and planning of movements.
  • Tourette Syndrome: A condition involving repetitive movements or unwanted sounds (tics) that cannot be easily controlled.  

Common Traits

Differences with communication, sensory sensitivities, unique way of thinking, managing time and tasks.

Strengths: Creativity, problem-solving abilities, strong focus on interests, empathy and deep care for others.

Supports: Individualised education plans (IEPs), sensory accommodations, structured environments, therapy (e.g., occupational, speech).
